Matteo joined the Wolfson Unit in 2007, after obtaining an MSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Perugia, Italy and a PhD on yacht race modelling under the joint supervision of the Universities of Southampton and Perugia.

Matteo is the Unit’s vessel stability and safety lead as well as a senior powerboat tester and the Wolfson marine design software manager. He has a track record of managing and conducting a broad range of numerical and experimental stability consultancy projects for clients worldwide.

Over the years, this has included stability assessments in support of marine accident investigations and luxury yacht brokers, independent checks of stability calculations conducted by third parties and the preparation of stability books for a diverse range of vessels (from a solar powered catamaran in Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake to a 140ft sailing superyacht). Matteo has supported the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) on investigations such as F/V JMT and F/V Joanna C and, since 2008, has been responsible for Wolfson’s hydrostatics and stability software HST. The HST suite has a worldwide customer base and is currently used by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Large Yacht Services team and MAIB.

Since January 2022, Matteo has been providing expert support to the MCA Fishing Safety team and other UK fishing industry stakeholders on matters concerning the implementation of the Code of Practice for Fishing Vessels less than 15m Overall Length (Merchant Shipping Notice 1871 Amt. 2) and has contributed to redrafting MGN 503 Amt. 1 (F) ‘Procedure for Carrying out Small Fishing Vessel Stability Tests’ of September 2022.

Matteo is currently leading a participatory study supported by the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, Research England and The Seafarers Charity, into the survivability of small fishing vessels. He is a member of the Stability Working Group within the Fishing Industry Safety and Health (FISH) Platform and the International Commercial Fishing PFD Working Group.

Matteo is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
